THERE WILL BE BLOOD

Class: Motion Design 02, Instructor: Miguel Lee
Styleframe, Motion, Main Title, Video, 2014

There Will Be Blood tells the story of Daniel Plainview, an ambitious, murderous oil pioneer on his hunt and rise to power. The blood in There Will Be Blood refers to kin, killing and Christ's work on Calvary. But most importantly, it evokes oil—the dark, powerful blood of the earth, pumped from the ground via the low, loud pulse of Daniel's wells.

Plainview’s alliance with rapacious pastor, Eli, portrays religion and capitalism as vehicles for selfish gain—one feeds off the land, the other, wealth. As the plot unfolds, Plainview becomes increasingly blinded by his own ambition, which leads to the destruction of innocent lives, the lands of Little Boston, his family, and ultimately his own soul. In the end, Daniel gains the world, yet loses everything. "I have a competition in me," Daniel confesses. "I want no one else to succeed."

There Will Be Blood was awarded a Silver Cube for title design under the student category at The Art Directors Club's 95th Annual Awards in New York City.
